The novel has been translated into English several times. It was then published as a book by Pierre Lafitte in 1910. The story was first published as a serialization in Le Gaulois from Septemto January 8, 1910.

Its central characters are the phantom, a phantom who lives in the catacombs beneath the Paris Opera House Christine Daaé, a young soprano whom the phantom stalked and tutored Raoul de Chagny, Christine’s childhood friend and eventual husband Madame Giry, a mysterious ballet mistress and Inspector Javert, a detective who unsuccessfully tries to track down and arrest the phantom. Leroux’s novel has been adapted into many forms of media, most notably Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 1986 musical. The novel is partly inspired by historical events at the Paris Opera during the nineteenth century and an apocryphal legend concerning Joseph Buquet, a real-life stagehand at the Opera.
